On this day in music history: January 21, 1978 – “Our Love” by Natalie Cole hits #1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart for 2 weeks, also peaking at #10 on the Hot 100 on April 15, 1978. Written and produced by Chuck Jackson & Marvin Yancy, it is the fifth R&B chart topper for the daughter of the legendary Nat King Cole. Co-songwriter and producer Yancy writes the song shortly after marrying the singer. Released as the first single from Cole’s fourth album “Thankful” in November of 1977, it quickly races up the R&B charts and crossover to the pop singles chart. “Our Love” is Cole’s fifth single to top the R&B chart in under three years, and third top ten pop single. Surprisingly, the singers’ hot streak dramatically tapers off after 1979 when marital and drug problems derail her career. It is nearly ten years before she returns to her former hit making prowess when she releases the album “Everlasting” in 1987, spinning off the hit singles “Jump Start”, “I Live For Your Love” and “Pink Cadillac”. “Our Love” is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
